Missioni (conferenze, scuole e simili)

PhD Student Guide to the PhD Course

Below, some operating instructions on what to do.

We will refer to the portal Campusnet PhD in Computer Science (the site you are browsing) with the term Site.

This handbook helps in the comprehension of the instructions of normative reference, which is the key document for understanding the course of the PhD, avalaible at http://dott-informatica.campusnet.unito.it/html/statuto_dott_informatica.pdf

Prepare / modify the curriculum

The curriculum for the doctorate includes, basically, 5 exams required to be chosen from a group of enabled courses (at least one in Bertinoro). It is MANDATORY that at least TWO examinations are selected from those of the Graduate School of Bertinoro (attendance is mandatory for doctoral students in the first year).

In addition, the Department of Computer Science of Torino and the Piemonte Orientale offer some courses for doctoral students. Informations  available in the section COURSES AND SEMINARS -> COURSES of Site, where, apart from the list of courses, you can find time and place of the lectures, program, examination modalities and so on.

It is possible that supplementary exams are planned for new PhD students with some formative debts (typically in cases where you do not have a degree in computer science). The College of Doctorate and the supervisor will determine which exams the student need to pass.

The student must prepare, within the first TWO months of taking the service, a curriculum that includes exams that plans to sit. The plan must be prepared in PDF format and uploaded on the Site (http://dott-informatica.campusnet.unito.it/do/home.pl/View?doc=phd_plans.html), where he has to fill a form based on the cycle membership. The plan will be evaluated by the college course, with the tacit consent rule: in the absence of notification to the contrary within one month from submission, the plan is approved.

You can CHANGE the curriculum: it is necessary

- to communicate the change to the Coordinator, indicating the change (which examination out, which examination in), its motivation, and attaching the new curriculum

- to reload the plan filling out the form, following the same mode as the first loading.

It holds the rule of tacit consent: in the absence of notification of to the contrary within 10 days of the request, the new plan is approved.

Successful completion of each examination shall be forwarded by the head of the course to the Coordinator, indicating the successful verification.

For students who must take only 6 exam it is MANDATORY to have supported at least 4 exams to be admitted to the second year and all the exams to be admitted to the third year. The School Committee will decide on a case-by-case basis for students who have more than 6 exams. It 's always MUST have passed all the exams required to gain access to the final exam PhD, ie the final dissertation.

PhD Student Report

At the end of each year, when requested by the Coordinator, each student must upload an annual report, comprising all the activities of the year (schools, conferences, grants, projects, exams, etc.).

The section can be found under "PhD Students Reports".

The report must be made in PDF format. A report schema is available here in Word format, here in Latex format.

Thesis Proposal - Access to the final exam - Defense of Thesis - Extension

For details and procedures regarding the dissertation proposal and the final dissertation, access to the official standard reference (link at top of page).

The doctoral thesis must be submitted to the auditors (appointed in October by the School Committee on a proposal from the speakers) by the end of November.

If you are unable to complete the thesis within 3-year period, you can request an extension, INVARIABLY of one year, within which the student can conclude the thesis and discuss.
There is no extension of the PhD scholarship: the time of one year is intended solely to conclude the thesis work.
